Storing research peptides in Australian conditions

Humidity and heat are the two biggest threats to lyophilised material in an Australian lab. A practical storage protocol.

Lyophilised material

Unreconstituted peptide is stable for extended periods at -20°C in a sealed, desiccated vial. Short holds at 2–8°C are acceptable, and brief room-temperature transit does not meaningfully degrade most sequences.

The critical variable is moisture ingress, not temperature. Never open a cold vial in a humid room — allow it to equilibrate to ambient temperature first so condensation does not form on the lyophilisate.

After reconstitution

Solutions are far less stable than solids. Store at 2–8°C, protect from light, and treat the working life as short. Aliquot on the day of reconstitution rather than repeatedly accessing one vial.

Freeze-thaw cycles

Each freeze-thaw cycle costs you material. Antimicrobial peptides and longer sequences are the least tolerant. Aliquot into single-use volumes at the point of reconstitution and you eliminate the problem entirely.
